Introduction of Air Cushion to Reduce Seismic Demand in Cylindrical Water Storage Tanks

نویسندگان

چکیده مقاله:

Water storage tanks not designed explicitly for seismic loading could require retrofit. One of the common ways of retrofit include some structural change in the lateral load resisting system that could be expensive and requires the tank to be out of service for relatively long time. This paper introduces a novel method to reduce seismic demand on tank’s wall without structural intervention. This is done by employing air cushions adjacent to the wall. The paper investigates the effect of air cushion system on the seismic response of the cylindrical water storage tanks. While in tank without air cushion, the boundary condition adjacent to tank wall is kinematic with no control on the wall pressure, in the proposed method this boundary condition becomes kinetic, enabling control of dynamic fluid pressure on the tank walls. The response parameters of the tank is developed in terms of wall pressure, wave height, base shear, and overturning moment in cylindrical tanks of different sizes with and without air cushions under the far field and near source ground motions. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is an effective way to reduce sloshing force demand.

Improving seismic performance of elevated cylindrical water storage tanks using nonlinear isolators incorporating liquid–structure interaction

Pervasive construction of elevated liquid tanks as the most important sources for urban hygienic water, and their failure under earthquake, highlighs the necessity for research toward new passive control devices. Design and use of base-isolation systems for elevated liquid tanks is propounded as a novel seismic engineering technology. To date, no special examination has been discussed in relati...

Introducing Padded Wall to Reduce Sloshing Induced Wall Pressure in Water Storage Tanks

Sloshing due to ground motion develops large pressure on the walls of water retaining tanks. This paper evaluates the efficacy of padded walls on the reduction of sloshing effects in rectangular water storage tanks subjected to ground motion. An analytical solution based on velocity potential function is provided to obtain the response of  rigid and padded wall tanks in terms of the wave elevat...

Fluid damping of cylindrical liquid storage tanks

A method is proposed in order to calculate the damping effects of viscous fluids in liquid storage tanks subjected to earthquakes. The potential equation of an ideal fluid can satisfy only the boundary conditions normal to the surface of the liquid. To satisfy also the tangential interaction conditions between liquid and tank wall and tank bottom, the potential flow is superimposed by a one-dim...

Recent Advances in Seismic Response Analysis of Cylindrical Liquid Storage Tanks

Japan is in a seismically active area and experiences many damaging earthquakes with loss of life. In 1995, the Hyogoken-Nanbu earthquake caused major destruction in Kobe City and in 2011 the Great Eastern Japan earthquake and tsunami caused major destruction in the Pacific coast areas of northeastern Japan. Additionally, recent relatively less destructive earthquakes include the 2003 Tokachi-O...

Application of Fuzzy Modeling to Earthquake Engineering: Seismic Performance of Cylindrical Tanks

The fuzzy logic concept provides a natural way of dealing with problems in which the source of imprecision is an absence of sharply defined criteria rather than the presence of random variables. The fuzzy approach considers cases where uncertainties play a role in the control mechanism of the concerned phenomena. Fuzzy modeling includes fuzzification, fuzzy analysis and defuzzification. In this...
